Specializing in children’s literature and publishing
I started as an editorial assistant at Viking Children's Books, a division of what is now Penguin Random House, just two weeks out of college. I'm proud to have spent more than a decade with Viking, rising through the ranks to become Executive Editor. After eleven years of living in Brooklyn and working in Manhattan, though, it was time for me to return to New Orleans with my family.
As the editor of award-winning fiction and nonfiction children's books ranging in format from board books to novelties and picture books to young adult fiction, I have a wide-ranging editorial perspective. Books acquired and edited by me have received awards and honors including: The Boston Globe Horn Book Award, the Golden Kite Award, the Charlotte Zolotow Award, the New York Times Best Illustrated Award, the Jane Addams Children's Book Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
Through Catherine Frank Editorial Services I actively work with authors, agents, packagers, app developers, and publishers ranging from small presses to the largest trade houses. I work on a variety of manuscripts including picture book texts, nonfiction books for older readers, and middle grade and YA novels. I'm a member of the SCBWI and the Women’s National Book Association.
My favorite part of the editorial process is curling up in a chair to read and edit a revision, using either good old paper and pencil or a laptop. Deepening characters, focusing plots, and improving a story's pacing are my specialties, whether in 100-word picture book texts, novels in verse, or nonfiction manuscripts.
